Ukraine is developing domestic ballistic missiles and procuring glide bombs to address air defense vulnerabilities caused by delays in U.S. Patriot manufacturing licensing.

Amid persistent Russian ballistic missile strikes, Ukraine is confronting critical air defense shortages as bureaucratic delays hold up U.S. licensing for domestic Patriot interceptor production. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated that establishing Patriot manufacturing could take between 12 months and several years.

To bridge this period of ballistic vulnerability, domestic Ukrainian defense firms are developing indigenous ballistic missiles, though technical hurdles currently prevent immediate mass production. Concurrently, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are procuring the newly tested "Equalizer" glide bomb system. Developed by DG Industry alongside the Brave1 incubator, the conversion kit fits unguided aerial bombs with wings and guidance systems, enabling long-range precision strikes from Soviet-era and Western fighter jets. Defense analysts emphasize that these domestic defense initiatives aim to reduce reliance on foreign military aid during prolonged procurement timelines.
