Ukraine expands domestic weapons output amid air defense shortages

Ukraine is working to expand its domestic arms manufacturing capabilities to offset persistent air defense shortages and reduce reliance on Western military aid. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that two local defense firms are developing ballistic missiles, though technical hurdles remain before mass production can begin.

The efforts come as bureaucratic delays in obtaining U.S. licensing could postpone local production of Patriot air defense systems by up to several years. In response to recent Russian ballistic missile strikes, Ukrainian forces are adopting domestic solutions, including the newly flight-tested "Equalizer" precision glide bomb kit developed by DG Industry and the Brave1 tech incubator. Designed to upgrade unguided bombs for Soviet-era and modern Western aircraft, the system offers a rapid, low-cost method to enhance standoff strike capabilities while long-term missile programs remain under development.
