Ukraine adopts minority education law, easing diplomatic strain with Hungary

Ukraine's parliament passed a minority language education law, paving the way for progress on EU accession talks and bilateral meeting with Hungary.
The Ukrainian parliament has approved a legislative amendment guaranteeing native-language instruction for national minorities, securing 266 votes in the 450-seat assembly. The law regulates classroom instruction and the issuance of educational certificates in minority languages.
The passage addresses long-standing concerns regarding the Hungarian minority in Ukraine, marking a significant step toward normalizing bilateral ties. Hungary indicated it would allow the opening of the second and third negotiating clusters in Kyiv's European Union accession process following the law's adoption. Additionally, the move establishes a foundation for potential high-level talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Hungarian leadership.
