Ukraine adopts minority language education law to advance EU talks

Ukraine's parliament approved minority language education legislation with 266 votes, fulfilling a Hungarian condition to advance EU accession negotiations.
The Ukrainian parliament has formally passed legislation expanding native-language education rights for national minorities, with 266 lawmakers in the 450-seat assembly voting in favor of the measure.
The legislative approval fulfills a condition set by Budapest, which previously indicated it would remove its veto on opening the second and third clusters of Ukraine’s European Union accession negotiations once the law was adopted. Beyond advancing Kyiv’s EU integration, the reform aims to ease more than a decade of diplomatic friction between Ukraine and Hungary regarding minority rights. The breakthrough is expected to lay the groundwork for a potential high-level meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Hungarian political leaders.
