Ukraine is expanding domestic weapons development, including ballistic missiles and glide bomb kits, as licensing for Patriot systems faces multi-year delays.

Following recent Russian ballistic missile strikes, Ukraine is accelerating efforts to bolster its domestic arms manufacturing and reduce reliance on Western military aid. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that two local defense firms are developing indigenous ballistic missiles, though technological hurdles must be overcome before mass production begins. Meanwhile, bureaucratic delays and licensing processes mean establishing domestic production of U.S. Patriot air defense systems could take up to several years.

To address short-term air defense and strike capability gaps, Kyiv is procuring the "Equalizer" glide bomb kit. Developed by DG Industry and defense incubator Brave1, the guidance system converts conventional aerial bombs into precision-guided munitions compatible with both Soviet-era and modern Western fighter jets. Analysts emphasize that expanding local production capacity is vital to sustain defense operations against intensified missile barrages.
