U.S. President Donald Trump warned of severe tariffs against the EU following proposals to give Canada associate membership status.

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with severe tariffs and trade restrictions following a proposal by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to grant Canada associate membership.

Speaking to reporters, Trump labeled the associate membership initiative "ridiculous" and warned that Washington could view closer EU-Canada ties as a "hostile move." He stated that the U.S. might impose "very severe tariffs" or halt certain trade with Europe if the bloc acts out of "bad intention." However, he noted that a proposal made in "good faith" would be acceptable.

The diplomatic friction follows growing trade disputes between the U.S. and Ottawa. Finnish President Alexander Stubb recently highlighted Ottawa's drift toward Europe, asking whether Canada might fit better alongside the EU rather than as a U.S. state.
