Trump threatens EU with tariffs over proposed Canada association deal

US President Donald Trump has threatened the EU with tariffs over proposals to offer Canada associate membership status.
US President Donald Trump has warned the European Union against deepening bilateral relations with Canada, threatening significant import tariffs and trade restrictions. The warnings follow European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's proposal to offer Canada associate membership status within the bloc.
Speaking to reporters, Trump characterized the initiative as "ridiculous" and cautioned that actions perceived as a "hostile act" toward Washington could trigger economic retaliation. However, he suggested sanctions might be avoided if the proposal stems from good intentions. The diplomatic friction highlights growing transatlantic realignment following earlier remarks by Finnish President Alexander Stubb. European officials have not withdrawn the proposal.
