US President Donald Trump threatened tariffs against the EU after Ursula von der Leyen proposed associate membership for Canada.

US President Donald Trump has threatened severe tariffs and trade restrictions against the European Union following a proposal by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to grant Canada associate EU membership.

Speaking to reporters, Trump described the initiative as "ridiculous" and warned that Washington could view closer integration as a "hostile action." However, he noted that trade measures might be spared "if good intentions are behind it," leaving room for interpretation.

The dispute follows heightened trade friction between Washington and Ottawa, recently underscored by Finnish President Alexander Stubb's satirical remarks regarding Canada's ties to Europe versus the United States.
