Trump threatens EU with tariffs over proposed associate membership for Canada

U.S. President Donald Trump warned of tariffs against the EU if Brussels offers Canada associate membership status.
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose high tariffs and restrict trade with the European Union if Brussels moves forward with plans for closer integration with Canada. The warning comes after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested offering Ottawa associate membership status within the bloc.
Trump described the initiative as "ridiculous" and warned that Washington could view the step as hostile depending on European intentions. The proposal follows increasing alignment between Brussels and Ottawa, highlighted earlier by Finnish President Alexander Stubb, as Canada seeks deeper ties with Europe amid mounting economic friction with the United States.
