US President Donald Trump has threatened the EU with trade tariffs over proposals to offer Canada associate membership status in the bloc.

United States President Donald Trump has warned the European Union against deepening its relationship with Canada, threatening heavy tariffs and trade suspensions.

Trump described European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s proposal to offer Canada associate membership as "ridiculous." Speaking to journalists, Trump warned that any initiative considered a "hostile act" against Washington would face strong economic countermeasures, though he hinted trade sanctions could be avoided if the proposal stems from good intentions.

The proposal followed earlier statements by Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who publicly questioned whether Ottawa should align more closely with Europe amid rising transatlantic friction. European officials have not formally abandoned the idea.
