Trump threatens EU tariffs over proposed associate membership for Canada

US President Donald Trump has issued new warnings of trade penalties against the European Union following a proposal by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to offer Canada associate membership in the bloc.

Speaking to reporters, Trump described the associate membership initiative as "ridiculous" and warned that Washington could impose severe duties or suspend trade in certain sectors if Brussels deepens its partnership with Ottawa. Trump added that the move might be viewed as hostile depending on European intentions, though he acknowledged that benign motives would be acceptable.

The dispute comes amid heightened economic tensions between Washington and Ottawa, which had previously prompted Finnish President Alexander Stubb to comment on Canada's diplomatic orientation.
