Sweden's opposition maintains a 176-173 seat lead as vote counting continues, while the Sweden Democrats face national decline alongside local victory.

Vote counting in Sweden's general election continues to show a tight contest, with the opposition alliance holding a narrow lead of 176 seats against the governing coalition's 173. The Social Democrats have called for Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to step down, while the Left Party secured noticeable gains.

Meanwhile, the right-wing Sweden Democrats experienced their first parliamentary setback, dropping to 17.5 percent of the vote from 20.5 percent in 2022 after losing voters to the Moderates and younger demographics. Although party official Tobias Andersson described the result as troubling, party leader Jimmie Åkesson rejected claims of defeat, stating "there is no obvious winner in this election" while continuing to demand cabinet positions. In contrast to its national decline, the party achieved a major local victory in Färgelanda, winning 39 percent of the municipal vote following public disputes over local school closures.
