Spanish authorities remain divided over scale of Ceuta border crisis

Spanish central and regional officials report conflicting figures following a major border attempt in Ceuta, amid rising fatality estimates and political fallout in Madrid.
Six days after a major border crossing attempt at El Tarajal, Spanish authorities remain deeply divided over the scale of the crisis in Ceuta. The central government maintains that 2,500 migrants, including 500 unaccompanied minors, remain in the enclave, whereas regional leadership estimates the total at 6,000 and suggests overall entry attempts reached 80,000.
Concurrently, local authorities report up to 88 fatalities, prompting the Guardia Civil to establish a dedicated missing persons unit. Military forces have also been reported detaining groups near the border for immediate return.
The crisis has triggered political fallout in Madrid, deepening fractures between the Interior and Defense departments. Following an unverified alert claiming 49,000 entries, the central government dismissed a National Security Department official over a "loss of trust".
