Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has resigned seven months early, triggering snap presidential elections alongside upcoming parliamentary polls.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić resigned on September 27, stepping down seven months prior to the conclusion of his second five-year term. Under Serbia's constitution, Vučić is prohibited from seeking a third consecutive term as head of state. His departure opens the way for early presidential elections, which must be held within 90 days.

The resignation comes shortly before snap parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25, following the prior dissolution of the national legislature. Former parliamentary speaker Ana Brnabić has taken office as interim president to oversee state affairs during the political transition.
