Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić resigned seven months early, triggering snap presidential elections and leaving Ana Brnabić as acting president.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić officially resigned on Sunday, September 27, ending his second five-year term seven months ahead of schedule. The step paves the way for snap presidential elections, which must take place within 90 days under constitutional rules.

Because Serbia's constitution forbids a president from serving three consecutive terms, Vučić was ineligible for reelection. Outgoing parliamentary speaker Ana Brnabić has stepped in as acting president while the country operates under a caretaker government.

The move aligns the presidential vote timeline with Serbia's snap parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25, following the prior dissolution of the national legislature.
