Russia launches extensive strikes across Ukraine as diplomatic developments unfold
Russian overnight strikes hit Ukrainian infrastructure as Italy opts out of upcoming coalition military exercises.
Russian forces launched widespread overnight missile and drone strikes targeting civilian infrastructure across Ukraine, affecting regions including Kyiv, Odesa, Chernihiv, and Kryvyi Rih. A strike on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih killed at least 15 people and injured over 130. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas condemned the assault, stating it shows Russia's "depravity." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres to take action to stop the war.
In response, Ukrainian strikes targeted a major Lukoil oil refinery in Russia, while Moscow noted that discussions regarding a prisoner exchange remain underway.
On the diplomatic front, the United Kingdom authorized joint French-Ukrainian production of SCALP cruise missiles. Meanwhile, Italy reaffirmed its opposition to deploying personnel to Ukraine, announcing it will refrain from participating in upcoming multinational coalition exercises scheduled for autumn.
