European nations face severe heatwaves, with Italy placing 27 cities on red alert, Austria breaking heat records, and France reporting over 7,300 excess deaths since May.

Extreme heat continues to sweep across Europe as Italy extended red weather alerts to all 27 of its major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria. Italian health authorities warned that temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius will persist for the coming week, advising the public to avoid direct sunlight during peak daylight hours.

Elsewhere, Austria registered an all-time record temperature of 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna. In France, health officials reported over 7,300 excess deaths during heatwaves between May and July, with the country enduring 52 heatwave days since mid-June. Meteorologists warn that France and the United Kingdom are preparing for additional days of high temperatures amid heightened wildfire risks across the continent.
