A fourth summer heatwave has brought record temperatures, red alerts across Italy, and over 7,300 excess deaths in France.

A fourth consecutive summer heatwave continues to sweep across Europe, bringing extreme temperatures, severe drought, and heightened health risks across the continent.

In Italy, health authorities issued red weather warnings for all 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as daytime temperatures reach up to 40 degrees Celsius. Italian officials urged the public to stay indoors between 11:00 and 18:00 and stay hydrated following recent heat-related fatalities.

Record-breaking heat was also documented elsewhere in Central Europe. Austria recorded its highest temperature on record after mercury levels reached 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna. Meanwhile, French health authorities reported more than 7,300 excess deaths tied to 52 heatwave days since May. Authorities across Western and Central Europe, including France and the United Kingdom, remain on high alert for ongoing wildfires and prolonged dry spells.
