Political scientist details Soviet pressure on former Finnish prime minister Keijo Liinamaa

Political scientist Alpo Rusi has provided further details regarding covert Soviet intelligence efforts targeting Finnish domestic politics during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Writing in a guest column for Iltalehti, Rusi examined the political maneuvers involving the KGB and highlighted specific threats directed at Keijo Liinamaa, who served as Finland's caretaker prime minister and national conciliator, shortly before his death in December 1980.

According to Rusi, Soviet intelligence operations sought to manipulate national labor market negotiations and position Moscow strategically ahead of expected presidential succession dynamics surrounding President Urho Kekkonen. Liinamaa had previously disclosed receiving severe warnings regarding his role in national reconciliation and governance. The analysis underscores the extent of Soviet covert influence intended to maintain leverage over Finland's foreign and domestic policies during the Cold War era.
