Moscow expands security controls and military ties amid Western tensions

Russia expands domestic FSB authority and receives North Korean missile units while Vladimir Putin warns Western states over vessel seizures.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of retaliatory steps against Western countries following the impounding of Russian merchant vessels, describing the maritime interventions as "piracy" during a naval drill inspection.
Simultaneously, Ukrainian military intelligence reported that approximately 90 North Korean military personnel are deploying to western Russia's Voronezh region. Intelligence representative Andrii Cherniak indicated the detachment is slated to operate six launchers alongside roughly 120 ballistic missiles targeting Ukraine.
Within Russia, security analyst Andrei Soldatov highlighted that the Federal Security Service (FSB) has achieved unprecedented sway since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine began. Soldatov noted that the Kremlin relies heavily on the agency for domestic surveillance, military intelligence gathering, and regime protection.
