US envoy faces scrutiny over $6 billion Balkan gas deal

A Wall Street Journal investigation highlights US Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle's role in facilitating a $6 billion natural gas deal in Albania.
An investigation published by The Wall Street Journal and reported in regional outlets has detailed the involvement of US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle in a $6 billion natural gas arrangement in Albania.
In March, Guilfoyle met with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama in Tirana alongside executives from Greek infrastructure firm Aktor and lobbyist Christos Marafatsos. A formal agreement for natural gas supply was signed approximately one month later. The report highlights potential conflicts of interest surrounding Marafatsos, who simultaneously served as a private energy lobbyist and an advisor to the envoy. The revelations have raised concerns across Europe regarding the boundaries between official American diplomacy and private commercial energy ventures.
