Moldovan authorities plan temporary grain import licensing until October 31 while tackling nicotine pouch sales and seizing 1.9 million contraband cigarettes.

Moldovan authorities are advancing regulatory measures across agriculture, public health, and law enforcement. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan announced on August 21 that the government plans to reintroduce temporary licensing for grain imports until October 31 to protect domestic farmers, with a cabinet vote scheduled for next week.

Simultaneously, public health officials are addressing the distribution of oral nicotine pouches. The Ministry of Education launched an informational campaign warning parents about health risks to minors. While legislation bans nicotine pouches effective June 24, 2026, tobacco producer Philip Morris recently introduced the product locally, arguing that current legal frameworks permit sales through June 2027.

In security operations, law enforcement officers in northern Moldova seized 1.9 million contraband cigarettes following raids targeting two suspects, aged 56 and 66, involved in illicit trade.
