Lithuanian president urges calm amid border security buildup and defense challenges

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda urged calm over Russian border defenses while acknowledging broader defense delays and ministry friction.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has called on citizens to remain calm as the country fortifies its border with Russia, framing the increased troop deployment as a proactive measure against potential security risks. Emphasizing early preparation, Nausėda stated, "It is better to take additional security measures in good time to prevent risks than to react belatedly."
Beyond border defense, Nausėda highlighted several national security challenges, acknowledging that Lithuania's air defense system is incomplete and that joint drone production projects with Ukraine face delays. He also addressed internal friction between defense ministry officials and military leadership, warning that a recent ministry scandal risks damaging public confidence. Additionally, the president noted lessons drawn from severe regional storms.
