France's Constitutional Council approved assisted dying legislation while striking down a proposed social media ban for under-15s.

France's Constitutional Council delivered major rulings on Friday, upholding legislation establishing a right to assisted dying while striking down a proposed ban on social media for children under 15.

The court declared the end-of-life bill constitutional, adding three reservations to clarify its practical application. Notably, the decision guarantees a conscience clause for healthcare facilities, including private and religious institutions. President Emmanuel Macron commended the ruling, stating it "completes an exemplary democratic debate." The decision removes the final legal hurdle to the bill's promulgation.

In contrast, the council invalidated Article 1 of a digital safety bill, ruling that a general prohibition on social media access for minors under 15 unjustifiably infringed on public liberties. The ruling nullifies a flagship presidential initiative. Additionally, the court validated provisions within an emergency agricultural law.
