France’s Constitutional Council has approved landmark assisted dying legislation while striking down a proposed social media ban for children under 15.

France’s Constitutional Council has approved landmark legislation introducing a conditional right to assisted dying while striking down a proposed social media ban for children under 15.

The high court declared the end-of-life bill constitutional, clearing the path for its official promulgation. However, judges established three interpretative reservations, notably guaranteeing a conscience clause for private and religious healthcare facilities. President Emmanuel Macron praised the ruling, stating it "completes an exemplary democratic debate."

In contrast, the council invalidated Article 1 of a digital safety bill that sought to prohibit minors under 15 from using social media platforms. The court determined that a general prohibition disproportionately restricted public liberties, effectively nullifying a flagship presidential initiative. Additionally, the council validated provisions regarding an emergency agricultural law.
