France's Constitutional Council approved conditional assisted dying legislation while invalidating a proposed social media ban for minors under 15.

France’s Constitutional Council ruled on August 14 to approve landmark legislation establishing a right to conditional assisted dying, alongside emergency agricultural measures. The high court issued three interpretative reservations, notably guaranteeing a conscience clause for private and religious healthcare establishments to opt out of performing end-of-life procedures. The ruling allows the legislation to proceed to official promulgation.

In the same session, the constitutional judges struck down Article 1 of a digital safety law that sought to introduce a blanket ban on social media access for children under 15. The court determined that a general prohibition represented an excessive burden on personal liberties, invalidating the central objective of the proposed restrictions.

French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the ruling on end-of-life care, describing the legislative process as an "exemplary democratic debate."
