Calm returned to French cities on Tuesday after authorities imposed night-time curfews to curb widespread cost-of-living unrest and over 2,400 detentions.

French cities experienced a calm Tuesday morning after local authorities imposed overnight curfews in parts of Paris and several other municipalities following a weekend of severe unrest triggered by cost-of-living protests.

Nationwide demonstrations devolved into looting, arson, and property damage, resulting in nearly 2,400 detentions, including over 1,000 in Paris alone. Dozens of security personnel sustained injuries, while hundreds of businesses and historical buildings reported damage.

In response, President Emmanuel Macron urged local authorities to prohibit unauthorized demonstrations, allowing only union-led rallies, while Lyon enacted a total ban on public assemblies.

Simultaneously, European Union regulators launched an investigation into potential foreign online interference. Security officials are examining whether pro-Russian and far-right accounts systematically amplified protest videos to incite further European instability.
