France's Constitutional Council validates assisted dying law, strikes down youth social media ban

France's Constitutional Council validated end-of-life legislation with conscience protections for religious facilities, while rejecting a social media ban for under-15s as disproportionate.
France’s Constitutional Council has approved legislation establishing a right to assisted dying while rejecting a proposed general ban on social media for children under 15 years old.
The court determined that parliament operated within its constitutional authority regarding end-of-life legislation. However, it issued three interpretative reservations, notably establishing a conscience clause allowing private and religious healthcare facilities to decline performing the procedures.
In contrast, the Council struck down the primary provision of a digital safety bill that sought to restrict social media access for minors under 15, ruling the general prohibition disproportionate. Key provisions of an emergency agricultural law were also upheld.
President Emmanuel Macron praised the decision, describing it as the completion of an "exemplary democratic debate."
