France's Constitutional Council approved assisted dying legislation with conscience clauses for private facilities, while striking down a social media ban for minors under 15.

France's Constitutional Council has validated legislation introducing a right to assisted dying, while striking down a proposed ban on social media for children under 15.

The court ruled that parliament acted within its authority regarding the end-of-life legislation, while introducing three interpretative reservations. Notably, these include a conscience clause allowing private and religious healthcare institutions, such as Catholic facilities, to opt out of offering the procedures.

Conversely, the Council invalidated the main provision of a digital safety bill that sought a general ban on social media access for under-15s, deeming the measure disproportionate. Key provisions of an emergency agricultural law were also approved.

President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the ruling, calling it the conclusion of an "exemplary democratic debate."
