France’s Constitutional Council has validated landmark end-of-life legislation while striking down a proposed social media ban for minors under 15.

France’s Constitutional Council has approved landmark legislation legalizing end-of-life care and assisted dying, while striking down a key measure that aimed to ban social media for children under 15.

In its decision, the high court ruled that parliament acted within its constitutional authority regarding the end-of-life bill, introducing three interpretative reservations. Notably, these allow private and religious healthcare facilities to invoke a conscience clause and decline offering assisted dying procedures.

Conversely, the court invalidated the flagship first article of a digital safety bill proposing a general ban on social media access for minors under 15, ruling the restriction disproportionate. Major provisions of an emergency agricultural law were also upheld.

President Emmanuel Macron praised the ruling on the end-of-life framework, calling it the completion of an "exemplary democratic debate."
