Severe heatwaves across Europe trigger red alerts in 27 Italian cities, record temperatures in Austria, and thousands of excess deaths in France.

Europe faces persistent summer heatwaves, bringing extreme temperatures, record highs, and severe public health risks across the continent.

In Italy, authorities extended red alerts to 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as temperatures approached 40 degrees Celsius. Officials advised residents to remain indoors between 11:00 and 18:00 following at least four heat-related deaths.

Record temperatures hit other nations as well, with Austria recording a historical high of 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna. Meanwhile, French health authorities reported over 7,300 excess deaths associated with 52 heatwave days since mid-June. Meteorologists warn that severe drought, wildfire risks, and temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius will continue across France and the United Kingdom.
