A fourth heatwave across Europe brings record temperatures, including 40.8°C in Austria, red alerts in Italy, and over 7,300 excess deaths in France.

A fourth heatwave of the season continues to push temperatures toward 40 degrees Celsius across Europe, creating severe health risks and record-breaking weather conditions.

In Italy, health authorities extended top-tier red weather alerts to all 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as at least four heat-related deaths were reported. Austria recorded its highest temperature on record, reaching 40.8 degrees Celsius in a Vienna suburb. Meanwhile, French health authorities reported more than 7,300 excess deaths associated with heatwaves between May and July, with the country recording 52 heatwave days since mid-June.

Authorities across Western Europe, including France and the United Kingdom, are bracing for further extreme temperatures alongside persistent wildfire risks and severe drought conditions.
