Europe faces severe heatwaves as Italy issues red alerts across 27 cities, Austria sets a temperature record, and France reports over 7,300 excess deaths.

Severe heatwaves continue to sweep across Europe, prompting red weather alerts, record temperatures, and heightened mortality risks. In Italy, health officials extended red alerts to all 27 monitored major cities as the country experiences its fourth major heatwave this year, with temperatures hovering near 40 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Austria recorded an all-time high temperature of 40.8 degrees Celsius in a suburb of Vienna.

France has endured 52 heatwave days since mid-June, with health authorities linking the prolonged extreme heat to over 7,300 excess deaths recorded between May and July. As drought conditions and wildfire risks intensify across the continent, meteorologists warn that both France and the United Kingdom are bracing for additional days of temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius. Authorities across affected regions continue to advise residents to stay indoors during peak daylight hours and maintain hydration.
