European allies face internal pushback over plans to trim US defense technology, while pressure mounts on Spain and Greece to supply air defense systems to Ukraine.

European governments are pushing to decrease reliance on American technology within their defense industries, motivated by political friction with Washington over trade and security commitments. However, defense sector representatives warn that sidelining United States components could compromise cybersecurity, diminish technological performance, and hinder coordination among NATO allies.

Simultaneously, European defense planners are confronting financial challenges along the eastern flank, where costly interceptor missiles are deployed to neutralize inexpensive enemy drones. To meet urgent air defense needs in Ukraine, European partners and NATO members are urging Spain and Greece to transfer Patriot missile systems to Kyiv. Under proposals scheduled for discussion at an upcoming EU ministerial summit in Dublin, Norway may fund the acquisition of the interceptors.
