Europe faces a fourth heatwave as Italy issues red alerts for 27 cities, Austria sets a temperature record, and France reports thousands of excess deaths.

Extreme weather conditions continue across Southern and Western Europe as a fourth summer heatwave brings temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius. In Italy, health officials extended top-tier red alerts to 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, advising citizens to remain indoors during peak afternoon hours following at least four heat-related deaths.

Meanwhile, Austria recorded its highest temperature on record, reaching 40.8 degrees Celsius in a Vienna suburb. Health authorities in France reported more than 7,300 excess deaths linked to extreme heat between May and July, with meteorological data indicating 52 heatwave days since mid-June. Further high temperatures, prolonged drought, and elevated wildfire risks are anticipated across France and the United Kingdom as regional weather patterns persist.
