Southern and Central Europe face a fourth summer heatwave, with Italy issuing red alerts for 27 cities and Austria recording a preliminary high of 40.8°C.

Southern and Central Europe are enduring a fourth major heatwave this summer, bringing record-breaking temperatures and widespread health warnings across the region.

In Italy, health authorities extended red weather alerts to all 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as forecasts predict temperatures near 40°C persisting for another week. Officials advised the public to avoid direct sunlight between 11:00 and 18:00, following at least four heat-related deaths reported in recent days.

Meanwhile, Central Europe experienced historic highs. Austria recorded a preliminary record temperature of 40.8°C in Stammersdorf, near Vienna, potentially surpassing its previous 2013 peak. Elsewhere, the United Kingdom and France are preparing for conditions approaching 40°C amidst broader reports of record-breaking global warmth, severe drought, and heightened wildfire risks.
