EU extends Russia sanctions after removing two oligarchs from blacklist

EU member states agreed to extend Russia sanctions against 3,000 targets after removing two prominent oligarchs to break a diplomatic deadlock.
European Union member states have reached an agreement to extend sanctions against nearly 3,000 Russian individuals and organizations linked to the invasion of Ukraine. To avoid a lapse in coverage, diplomats agreed to remove steel magnate Alisher Usmanov and financier Mikhail Fridman from the sanctions roster. The concession followed requests from France, Slovakia, and Luxembourg, which had temporarily stalled the renewal process and forced a deadline delay.
Alongside the compromise, EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg approved a major new sanctions package targeting Moscow's war economy. European officials described the expanded restrictions as one of Brussels' most comprehensive efforts to date, coming amid heightening uncertainty regarding future military and financial support for Ukraine from Washington.
