Czech social workers reported over 10,000 child abuse cases last year as the EU proposes new social media restrictions for children under the EU KIDS Act.

Czech child protection authorities recorded over 10,000 cases of child abuse and neglect last year, leading to 3,616 child removals from families. Experts suggest the figures represent only part of the problem, attributing the increase to societal insecurity or heightened public vigilance, while highlighting deficiencies in specialized family support services and clear guidance.

Simultaneously, the Czech government is finalizing a seven-billion-koruna project under the EU National Recovery Plan to launch over 300 new childcare facilities by September. Critics, however, warn that quality standards for these groups remain insufficiently defined.

At the European level, the European Commission proposed the EU KIDS Act to strengthen digital child safety across member states. The draft legislation prohibits children under 13 from using social media and restricts independent account creation to those aged 15 and older.
