Severe drought has reduced Czech rainfall by 34 percent, prompting river authorities to prepare emergency reservoir protocols as experts urge agricultural reform.

The Czech Republic is grappling with severe hydrological drought, with rainfall 34 percent below historical averages in one of the driest years recorded since 1961. Both groundwater and surface water levels have depleted significantly, leaving several smaller watercourses entirely dry.

Basin authority Povodí Vltavy warned that conditions across the Vltava river cascade mirror climate models originally projected for 2050. If water levels at the Orlík reservoir drop by an additional 3.5 meters, operators will begin tapping emergency reserves at the Slapy dam—an intervention expected only once every 50 years.

In response, the Czech government revived its National Coalition Against Drought and allocated 4 billion korunas (€160 million) alongside planned reservoir legislation. However, environmental researchers caution that constructing new dams cannot resolve regional shortages without agricultural reforms and landscape restoration to prevent desertification.

How outlets assessed this

    • Deník N Cautious Framed the statistical rise cautiously, highlighting expert debate over whether it stems from worsening conditions or increased public vigilance.
    • iROZHLAS Critical Emphasized critical gaps in social services, arguing that inadequate preventive support leads to unnecessary removals of children from families.
    • Hospodářské noviny Neutral Focused on upcoming government legal reforms aimed at accelerating court protections for vulnerable children without relying on slow expert opinions.
