Canada has announced matching 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion of US goods after trade talks with Washington broke down over weekend import duties.

The trade dispute between Canada and the United States has escalated after bilateral negotiations collapsed without an agreement. Washington enacted 50 percent import duties under Section 338 on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, affecting roughly five percent of Canada's annual exports to the US.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended further negotiations and announced counter-tariffs of up to 50 percent on nearly C$28 billion ($20 billion) of American imports. The Canadian levies cover items such as steel, apparel, furniture, and agricultural products. Ottawa also introduced domestic financial aid packages to cushion Canadian workers and businesses from potential economic harm. President Donald Trump warned that further retaliatory measures by Canada could trigger additional US trade restrictions.
