Poland plunges into political crisis following suspension of top court chief
Poland faces a major constitutional crisis after top court chief Bogdan Święczkowski was suspended, triggering protests, police response, and emergency talks.
Poland is experiencing a major political crisis following the suspension of Constitutional Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski on 30 October. The government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk requested the removal of judicial immunity for Święczkowski and his deputy to pursue potential criminal charges, after which a tribunal judge announced his suspension and assumed his duties.
The move sparked immediate unrest in Warsaw. Protesters attempted to storm the Constitutional Tribunal building, prompting the deployment of riot police around the premises. Nationalist opposition figures labeled the action an illegal power grab, while government allies maintained it was a necessary step to restore the rule of law.
President Karol Nawrocki cut short an official overseas trip to return to Warsaw. Declaring that "constitutional order has been violated," Nawrocki summoned urgent consultations with all parliamentary factions to address the escalating situation.
