A contentious Orange Order parade in Portadown was halted on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road. The Belfast High Court had issued a late-night ruling allowing 35 members of the Protestant order to conduct a restricted silent procession along the predominantly nationalist route for the first time since 1998.
Counter-protesters, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, assembled on the road to physically obstruct the parade. Citing growing safety concerns, police ultimately prevented the marchers from advancing beyond Drumcree Church. Orange Order representatives engaged in discussions with law enforcement as both demonstrator groups maintained their presence at the historic flashpoint, leaving the parade suspended amid high regional tensions.
