Austria faces academic pressure and high grade repetition rates as school year starts
As the new school year starts in Austria, data shows high grade repetition rates and rising academic pressure on primary pupils, prompting targeted support initiatives.
As the new school year begins across Austria, attention is focusing on rising academic pressure and systemic difficulties within the national education system. According to recent PISA data, 18 percent of 15-year-old Austrian students have repeated a grade, increasing to 36 percent in socioeconomically disadvantaged schools—both well above the OECD average of nearly 11 percent.
In primary schools, intense performance expectations have led to one-third of all pupils relying on private tutoring services. In response to these growing challenges, educational authorities are introducing measures such as the "Chancenbonus" support program for underfunded schools, alongside ongoing political debates regarding potential headscarf restrictions and administrative adjustments.
