Orange Order parade in Portadown halted as counter-protesters block route
A contentious Orange Order march in Portadown was halted on Sunday after thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road despite a Belfast High Court ruling.
A contentious Orange Order parade in Portadown remained stalled on Sunday as thousands of counter-protesters blocked Garvaghy Road. Despite an unprecedented late-night Belfast High Court ruling upholding a Parades Commission decision to allow a restricted silent march of 35 members past the predominantly nationalist area, police halted the procession near Drumcree Church due to safety concerns.
The designated morning timeframe for the procession lapsed without the marchers setting off, as crowd sizes grew and political figures, including Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill, joined the demonstration along the route. Police intervened to prevent the marchers from advancing, while representatives engaged in talks to defuse the standoff at the historic flashpoint. Tensions in the town remain elevated as both groups maintain their positions.
