EU extends Russian sanctions and adopts record package after oligarch compromise
EU states agreed to drop two Russian oligarchs from sanctions lists to secure a extension for nearly 3,000 targets, alongside approving a new sanctions package.
European Union member states have resolved a diplomatic standoff, agreeing to extend punitive measures against nearly 3,000 Russian individuals and entities supporting the war in Ukraine. The consensus was reached after diplomats extended negotiation deadlines following initial blocks raised by France, Slovakia, and Luxembourg.
To preserve the broader sanctions regime—which required unanimous approval to prevent automatic expiration—member states agreed to remove steel magnate Alisher Usmanov and financier Mikhail Fridman from the EU travel ban and asset freeze lists.
Concurrently, EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg approved their largest sanctions package to date against Russia's war economy. The new measures restrict energy exports and financial networks backing Moscow.
