US-Russia diesel deal draws bipartisan criticism and concern in Kyiv
The US-Russia agreement allowing Russian diesel exports faces widespread criticism in Washington and Kyiv, with analysts citing domestic political motives and strategic risks.
A recent agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to permit Russian diesel exports onto global markets continues to face scrutiny in Washington and Kyiv.
American officials informed Ukrainian counterparts during talks in Miami that the concession was designed to entice Moscow back to peace negotiations. However, Ukrainian officials remain concerned that the arrangement weakens their diplomatic position before formal discussions resume. Bipartisan critics in the US Congress argued that easing energy restrictions undermines strategic pressure on Moscow.
Analysts noted that the decision may be aimed at lowering domestic fuel costs ahead of upcoming US midterm elections. Experts also warned that revenues generated from Russian fuel sales could bolster Moscow's economy and indirectly benefit foreign allies, including Iran.
