EU extends sanctions against Russia as diplomatic and border tensions heighten
The EU renewed sanctions on Russia following a border train attack, while battlefield strikes persist despite claims of an agreement on energy infrastructure.
The European Union has renewed its sanctions framework targeting Russia amid continuing hostilities and escalating diplomatic frictions. European foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot publicly denounced a recent Russian strike on a train near the Ukrainian-Polish border, characterising the action as a deliberate effort to intimidate European nations and fracture allied unity.
The diplomatic rift persists despite assertions from US President Donald Trump that Moscow and Kyiv reached a mutual agreement to refrain from striking energy targets. Battlefield activity remains intense; shelling in Ukraine's Kherson region resulted in two fatalities and 14 injuries, while Ukrainian drone attacks reportedly wounded seven people across Russia's Belgorod region and Sochi. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky executed administrative changes, officially dismissing the nation's prosecutor general by decree.
