French government orders remote learning for hundreds of schools following violent student protests
France orders hundreds of high schools to shift to remote learning after student blockades escalate into arson attacks and severe property destruction across the country.
French authorities have ordered between 400 and 500 high schools to shift to remote learning following widespread property destruction and clashes during nationwide student blockades. Education Minister Édouard Geffray confirmed that 24 educational facilities were "ransacked or burned," including Nelson Mandela High School in Nantes, where an arson attack destroyed the main entrance.
The escalation prompted Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to convene an interministerial crisis cell and instruct cabinet members to cancel scheduled travel. Public transit in Strasbourg and Marseille faced severe disruptions, alongside reported assaults on transit workers. Student and youth organizations continue demanding increased funding and staff replacements ahead of planned nationwide union strikes, while Geffray condemned the destruction as an "entreprise de destruction du service public de l'éducation."
