French government opens crisis cell as high school blockades escalate
French authorities convened a crisis cell and ordered remote learning for up to 500 high schools following arson attacks and transport disruptions.
French authorities have convened an emergency interministerial crisis cell as high school blockades across the country increasingly turned into violent clashes and property destruction. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu instructed ministers to cancel upcoming travel to coordinate the response, while Education Minister Édouard Geffray ordered 400 to 500 high schools to transition to remote learning.
The unrest escalated following severe incidents, including an arson attack that destroyed the entrance of Nelson Mandela High School in Nantes, public transit disruptions in Strasbourg, and assaults on transit workers in Marseille. Geffray denounced the acts as an "entreprise de destruction du service public de l'éducation," noting that 24 facilities were ransacked or burned. High school and university student groups continue demanding additional educational resources and staff replacements ahead of planned nationwide union strikes.
