French high schools move to online classes as student blockades turn violent
Up to 500 French high schools will hold remote classes on Monday following widespread vandalism and arson during nationwide student blockades.
French authorities have ordered between 400 and 500 high schools to switch to remote learning on Monday after nationwide student blockades escalated into widespread violence and property destruction.
Education Minister Édouard Geffray reported that at least 24 schools suffered severe vandalism or arson, including a fire that destroyed the entrance hall of Nantes's Nelson Mandela High School. Government officials characterized the escalating actions as "urban violence" targeted at public infrastructure. In response, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu convened an interministerial crisis meeting and instructed cabinet ministers to cancel upcoming travel plans.
Public transit in cities such as Marseille and Strasbourg experienced major disruptions due to blockade actions. Student organizations and teacher unions have called for further nationwide strikes on Tuesday, demanding increased educational resources and staff replacements.
